Function and Application of Optical Switches

By means of GEZHI Optical Switch enable you to accelerate the reduction of total OPEX and CAPEX improving the networks reliability and enhancing the network operation. The switches can be applied to a variety of systems in Internet Exchange Service Providers (IXs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Data Centers (DCs), Cable TV Service Providers (CATVs), and Metro Ring Networks.

Application 1: Automatic Changeover, Bypass Protection, Restoration

Automatic changeover, bypass protection, and restoration are one of the basic challenges to improve the reliability and quality of network systems. The GEZHI Optic Switch is the most cut out for these applications.

a) FTTH (PON) – Route Diversity

In the event that an optical path on the main route is broken, the GEZHI optical switch changes the path to the backup route. This is done in a second by the SNMP command sent from an SNMP manager which is monitoring the network.

b) Highly Reliable Server Systems for Dedicated IP network

A dedicated IP network is expected to have a high level of reliability and consecutive communication flow without interruption. The GEZHI optical switch monitors the optical power of signals from servers, and automatically changes over the connections to a backup server in 10 ms when the main server down. This provides customers a seamless service.


c) ISP Equipment Redundancy

Some equipment such as ATM switches and ISP routers may need to a changeover to standby ones when enhancing services or maintaining systems. The GEZHI optic switch enables you to changeover the system to standby ones in 10 ms. Also, in an accident, the GEZHI optical switches automatically changeover the connections to standby ones in 10 ms. This provides your customers a seamless service.

d) Enhancement of Reliability in xDSL Backbone

The GEZHI Optical Switch monitors signal power, and automatically changes over the communication route from an inactive route to an active one when trouble occurs. The time for the changeover is in 10 ms, which provides your customers a seamless service.



CWDM transports several streams of data/storage/video or voice on a fiber optic cable. The GEZHI Optical Switch automatically changes over the broken route to a normal route when trouble happens. The short changeover time of 10 ms minimizes the loss of the streams.

f) Leased Circuit

A merit of a leased line is to provide customers an "always active" connection service between end points. The access line, an edge portion of the least line, is sometimes doubled to avoid connection disruption caused by some event of breakdown. The GEZHI Optical Switches automatically changes over to a live route in 10 ms when a trouble happens in one route. This greatly shortens the customer system's breakdown time.

g) Communication Path Redundancy in Mux/Demux Systems

h) Automatic Changeover in WDM Systems

WDM provides a most scalable, cost effective solution for addressing capacity, security, and distance capabilities. The system transacts and transmits a large quantity of data every second. Breakdown of WDM machine or transmission path may cause a serious problem in our internet life.
The GEZHI Optical Switch equipped with a 3dB branching device automatically changes over the route in 10 ms when it detects the lowering the power and trouble happening in WDM transponder or in a transmission path. This greatly improves system quality.

a) Upgrading ISP Services

Enhancing network system is a key activity for network service providers to provide best service to their customers. b) Bypass Switching in Metro Ring Network

Failure in appliances such as L2 switches connected to a network may affect the whole network performance. The GEZHI Optical Switches disconnects the failed appliances in a short time, which minimizes the effect of the fail to the network. A ring network configuration is popularly adopted in metro access networks and metro core networks because it provides high reliability and high operability.

c) Link Aggregation of IX Systems

Link aggregation (LAG) is a method of aggregating multiple network connections or paths in parallel to increase throughput. The LAG is also for port trunking, link bundling, or network bonding. The GEZHI Optical Switches provides a grouping lump switching of the network connections or paths in 10 ms.


d) Automatic Changeover in Wide Area Ethernet Systems

Wide-area Ethernet services are a type of virtual private network (VPN) service for connecting enterprise sites providing high-speed wide area network service at low cost. The reliability of the service is one of the key concerns for customers. The GEZHI Optic Switch automatically changeover the duplex routes during a breakdown of the route.


e) Core Station Diversion in Wide Area Ethernet Systems

Route summarization is an effective way for a scalable network. The GEZHI Optical Switch realizes a redundant system with route summarization configuration. This allows efficient use of the address space, as well as reducing the risk of discontinuation of networks, thus improving network manageability.


f) Delinking of High Layer Appliances

a) N+1 Configuration in 100GbE ISP Systems

Although system redundancy is important for reliable network operation, duplexing machines or equipment increases operation cost, especially for expensive machines or equipment. We provide GEZHI Optical Switches with an n x (n+1) switch function to customers special specifications. It enables for sharing a standby machine or equipment with existing n machines or equipment. In case a machine or equipment breaks down, the GEZHI Switch changes over the path to a standby machine or equipment in a short time. This enables both network redundancy and great reduction of cost.


b) Upgrade of Systems for Enhancing System Performance

According to the increase of data transactions, we sometimes need to change machines or equipment. The GEZHI Optical System provides a smooth and assured transaction in such instances. The existing systems can be collectively changed over to the new system at once. If some problems are found in the new system, you can return to the existing system at once.
